Letter From The Board President

Dear WSSL Community,

One of my favorite moments of the school year is standing in the circle for blessing before our potluck lunch at the Michaelmas festival.  I’ve seen that circle ebb and flow over the years and no matter the size of it, it is always heartwarming to see our community gathered together this way, in a circle, at the farm of our school’s founder.  Our youngest, Amara, in second grade now, was especially excited for Michaelmas this year.  She talked for days about riding the ferry, watching the play, dying a silk she wore to school the following Monday, and playing in the creek.  Celebrating these special moments as a community is just one of the many reasons I love The Waldorf School.

This year marks our 31st year as a school!  Our enrollment increased by 38 %.  We have eight grades, two early childhood classrooms, and parent-child classes.  We are making preparations for a new fence for the meadow.  Our new governance structure is in action. Our parent association is formed. We are working on a new strategic plan to help guide our school for the next few years.  We have many things to celebrate!

Our teachers work hard to bring this beautiful education to our children.  They often put in many more hours than they are contracted for and seem to give endlessly of their time and energy. Our Administrative Team works hard balancing the budget, increasing enrollment, and managing day-to-day operations of the school, as well as taking temperatures or covering recess. Our Board provides strategic direction and fiscal oversight for the school.  Our parents, grandparents, and friends all work together, from serving on committees to weeding the garden to picking up children from school.  I thank all who carry our school and I am grateful to this community for your collaboration and commitment to WSSL.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to acknowledge all our donors for their contributions. Our children are nourished by all who contribute.  Our unwavering purpose of bringing Waldorf education to the St. Louis community coupled with our dedicated teachers, staff, and community has brought us much success; but, our work is not over. How wonderful it would be if every family that wanted to send their child to the Waldorf School of St. Louis was able to, regardless of their finances. Gifts to the Annual Fund help support the work of our school and allow us to reach more children by providing tuition assistance to more families. Please consider giving, in any amount, to the 2023-2024 WSSL Annual Fund.

With gratitude,

Lauri Bhagat

President, WSSL Board of Trustees
